Betrayal!

A quote from Maria José Figueiredo at the Gates of Vienna blog, 18 December 2007
José Sócrates, the Portuguese prime minister, is still trying to decide in what way is his government going to ratify [the European Reform Treaty]. During the last couple of years, he has declared repeatedly that he would call for a referendum on the treaty, [...] Alan Lamassoure, Sarkozy’s adviser for European matters has said that, were Sócrates to call a referendum, that would be a ‘betrayal’ (sic) on his part; for, on that scenario, Gordon Brown would hardly be able not to do the same, other countries would follow, and some country or other is bound to say no to the treaty.
Flanders referendum on the EU Treaty

"I am calling all Members of the Flemish Parliament (MFP's) to call for
and make and organise in Flanders a referendum in re this ERT."
This is an excellent, timely proposal.
Call for a referendum in Flanders, too
Submitted by Bart Van Stappen on Wed, 2007-12-19 14:23.
As far as I understand, because of the Belgian federal Constitution, and because of the matter this European Reform Treaty (ERT) is dealing with, Flanders, too, is bound to ratify either NOT to ratify this ERT.
This might be a great chance for Flanders and Flemish government to show and prove that is it really democratic and aiming at democracy in its proper sense, by calling for and announcing a referendum in re this ERT in Flanders at least.
This way, Ireland might get the company of Flanders in showing the EUSSR that the people does matter.
Therefore, by this, I am calling all Members of the Flemish Parliament (MFP's) to call for and make and organise in Flanders a referendum in re this ERT.
No betrayal. Let the people speak out. This is what one calls democracy. Act now.
The people of Europe will be grateful -- and right so.
