Danish Imams Propose to End Cartoon Dispute

Update (7 February 2006): The Cartoon Hoax 

 

The Danish imams, who protested the publication of 12 Muhammad cartoons [see them all below] in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten last September, have announced that they want to end the dispute. For four months the imams and their radical Muslim organizations have unsuccesfully demanded government censorship. However, despite immense pressure (also from international organizations such as the UN and the EU) the Danish government refused to call the newspaper to account.

Last week a couple of Norwegian papers decided to publish the cartoons in support of the Danish paper while in Denmark moderate Muslims, encouraged by the government’s refusal to be intimidated by the radicals, have distanced themselves from the imams. The latter announced on Friday that they no longer demand apologies from Jyllands-Posten for the publication. Instead they said they just want two things: a guarantee from the Danish authorities that Muslims can freely practice their religion without being “provoked and discriminated.” And a declaration from Jyllands-Posten that the cartoons were not published with the intention of mocking the Muslim faith. “We want Jyllands-Posten to show respect for the Muslims. This can happen with an apology, but it can also happen in some other way. We will leave it to Jyllands-Posten to come up with some ideas,” said Ahmed Akkari, spokesman of the Muslim organizations. “We want respect for Muhammad restored and we want him to be described as the man he really was in history, and that he gets the respect he deserves,” Akkari stressed that Muslim organizations are still deeply opposed to the publication of the cartoons.

The Muslim organizations and Jyllands-Posten met last week to discuss the matter. “It was a good and constructive meeting. We agreed that we need to find a solution,” said Carsten Juste, editor of Jyllands-Posten. Juste stressed that the meeting was one step in a reconciliation process which the Muslim organizations and the newspaper began in December.

Some sceptics wonder whether the demands of the imams have changed fundamentally. They still insist that Jyllands-Posten admit that publishing the cartoons was wrong and make amends for it. The sceptics argue that the paper should not settle for a compromise on freedom of expression by justifying itself. Others wonder why the radical Muslims appear to be softening their demand and seem so eager to make a deal. Perhaps the decision of Norwegian papers such as Magazinet to support Jyllands-Posten by publishing the cartoons has made the radicals reconsider. Perhaps they fear a domino effect. Some Swedish papers are considering publishing the cartoons as well. If the Swedish government subsequently follows the position of the Danish and Norwegian governments, refusing to interfere and limit freedom of expression, the position of the radical Danish Muslims, who are looking for international support, will only weaken.

According to a poll taken this week among 1,047 people in Denmark 57% of the Danes support Jyllands-Posten’s decision to publish the cartoons, while 31% disagrees. Young people and men are more likely to support the decision. Almost two out of every three males and 61% of people aged between 18 and 25 years of age did so.

Meanwhile an international organization of Muslim intellectuals has threatened to mobilize “millions of Muslims all over the World” to boycott Danish and Norwegian products unless the Danish and Norwegian government condemn the publication of the cartoons, which is called an “attack on the Muslims of the World and on the Prophet.” In Saudi Arabia people are receiving e-mails and sms messages urging them to boycott Danish products “until Denmark offers an official apology.” The Organization of the Islamic Conference protested last week’s publication of the cartoons in the Norwegian paper Magazinet. The Iranian embassy in Oslo said that freedom of expression cannot justify publishing the cartoons. However, Finn Jarle Sæle, the editor of the Norwegian Christian newspaper Norge I DAG, announced that his paper is also considering publishing the cartoons. He called upon other Norwegian editors to do the same. Sæle says that so far many of them have only written editorials supporting freedom of expression but have not dared to publish the cartoons themselves.

Asked if wider publication will not lead to unnecessary confrontations between Christians and Muslims Sæle said the intention was not to provoke just for the sake of provoking, but rather to confront radical Islam in Norway. Perhaps it is necessary to provoke in order to do that, he said. Sæle wants the Norwegian imams to publicly oppose the death threats that have been sent to Magazinet’s editor Vebjørn Selbekk. According to Sæle these threats are not just directed against Magazinet. They affect the entire Norwegian media, not just one editor who dared to stand up for freedom of expression.

Your position isn't tenable if you profess to have no respect for liberal European values. Your argument becomes: I don't respect your values. How dare you disrespect mine.

Tolerance - and freedom of speech is a huge part of this - works both ways. We need to respect each other, but shoudln't we also all be strong enough in our beliefs to disregard the opinions of those who make fun of us?

And to I'm a Christian: Sanctimonious rubbish. I think what you mean is "We believe our god died for us". Statements of fact like that have always been part of the problem.

In this site some people suffer from paranoid personality…the same one says that he is secular .after few seconds ,he says that he is Christian and hid god died for his own eyes..then after a minute he says that religions is the origin of all problems and wars and that no need for it..then he says that all ideology about god is faked.

That would be so poetic, so sublime and so all-inspiring in its simple perfection. . . if it only was remotely true.

Pick up a world history book sometime and look up the 11th and 12th centuries. . . then, start looking for references to the Catholic Church and Jerusalem. You will find that the church hierarchy was quite upset because Jerusalem was inhabited by infidels: Muslims. Of course, remember that the Muslims (descendants of Abraham via Ishmael) came into possession of Jerusalem by conquering the former inhabitants, Roman Christians, who had taken it from the Persians, who had taken it from the Christian Romans who had converted to Christianity a few hundred years earlier after killing Christians for sport for a few hundred years before that - that is, after they had taken it away from the Jews (descendants of Abraham via Isaac) who had taken it from the Pagan Romans who had taken it from the Jews (probably the great-grandparents of Jesus) who had taken it from the Pagan Greeks, who had taken it from the Persians (who may or may not have fully accepted the monotheistic teachings of Zoroaster), who had taken it from Babylonians (golden calf). . . etc.

You getting the picture yet Christian?

Anyway, turning the page, you will find an order known as the Knights Templar who fought in these things called the Crusades.

If you read a full accounting of what happened, you will see that it ends with a religious/ethnic cleansing worthy of Hitler (another "Christian" who thought that Jews, rather than Muslims, should all die because they killed Jesus even though Jesus himself was a Jew). You will find accounts of the rape and murder of Muslim men, women, and children and scorched-earth pillaging of every place along the way - all in the name of the Christian God.

The Quran, The Bible, The Torah - All 100% Unnecessary Rubbish. None of them teach any worthwhile moral that can't be alternately derived from the thoughtful, empathetic human experience while all of them necessarily teach hatred via the exclusion and ultimate judgment and destruction of non-believers. I believe I already detailed some of the contributing factors directly and indirectly by citing some of the qualities of the West (and Christianity) as well as a Muhammed quote. If need be I'll elaborate, but for now I'll mention another important factor related to this issue:
the theological youth and thus "inexperience" of Islam coupled with the lack of an equivalent of the Protestant Reformation.

I've studied many of these contradictions in relative detail so I'm familiar with quite a few of them. One of the many reasons Christians do not tend do dwell on them is because we realize - as I mentioned - that the Bible was written by men who by definition are fallible. Muslims, on the other hand, consider the Quaran a holy book that is beyond all doubt.
Thus I suggest you check out the Skeptic's Annotated Bible, which is freely available online, if you like reading about such contradictions, but I urge you to check out their "walkthrough" of the Quaran as well.

A Question About Islam

It wasn't so long ago that virtually every Muslim on the planet was outraged by reports that US troops had desecrated the Koran. I'm not here to debate if that did or didn't happen, only observe the result of the reports and table a question about them.

For days there were protest, flag burning, threats against the west and the US in particular. Some of the marches in Islamic countries (oddly enough) even ended in the deaths of some of the protestors. There was no middle ground only universal condemnation by Muslim countries.

Then, within days, I read on AlJazeera's web site about a car bombing at a Shiite mosque in Bagdad. In this explosion 84 people were killed, many of them at the entrance to the mosque. Of these 84 most were women and children. Sunni's took credit for the attack.

My questions are;

Does anyone think that even ONE copy of the Koran was desecrated, say... with the blood, brains, and torn and burned flesh of any of the women, children, and entire families slaughtered at the mosque?

Why is that acceptable? I suggest acceptable because those very people and countries that were lined up in their shrill and self rightous condemnations against the west and the US, were strangely silent. Why is it ok for Muslim to kill Muslim and women and children to die in those sectarian attacks? Sunni's and Shiite's killing each other in the name of Islam... I suspect that both sides have very strong feelings about why THEY reflect the REAL Islam.

Islam should clean it's own house and moderates once again take control of their religion. For milleniums Islam survived in it's purest form. Now, hardliners are practicing a form of Islam that wouldn't be recognized only a decade ago. They have hijacked the worlds biggest religion and Muslims don't seem to care.

If I remember correctly I merely pointed out that I was not sure what Nernim was saying at one point, possibly because of Nernim's less than perfect grasp of the English language.

You're only referring to those who do not share your point of view, but I'd like to reiterate my previous point: Both sides - as represented on this forum - are making biased uneducated statements. Calling the Jews greedy, comparing them to rats, calling the West morally bankrupt or referring to Muslims as camel fuckers does not promote constructive dialogue. Who knew!
Perpetuating unfounded stereotypes is the antithesis of civilized debate, but, sadly, this is an acitivity numerous posters - Muslim and Western alike - do not care to engage in.

I agree with the muslim: christians, hindus, buddists and other superstious fools are just as stupid as the muslims. Most religious people are hypocrites, they can be violent even though their religion talks of peace, they break most of their holy teachings rules when other religious people are not looking, and basically they have chosen, by obsessing on their supersitions fantasies, to be ingorant people. Ignorant, unintelligent people tend to react violently when confronted with ideas that are different from their own. And these superstitions are prevalent in nearly every corner of the earth.

Muslims living in Denmark are obviously not a homogeneous group, but originate from many different countries, speak different languages, have different cultures, adhere to different lines of Islam, and as all other Danes have different levels of religious activity. Nevertheless they are very often perceived and described in the media as one group, mainly due to their visibility among ethnic Danes.

As we have seen there were many reasons that twelve cartoons could lead to a crisis with world wide consequences. Okay I agree, the freedom of speech is universal but the exercise of the freedom does not take place in a space without a societal context.
