Is Blair Betraying Britain?
From the desk of The Brussels Journal on Sat, 2007-06-16 22:03
A quote from The Financial Times, 15 June 2007:
Tony Blair, the British prime minister, could end up swapping Downing Street for a job as the first full-time European Union president, under a plan being actively touted by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president.
Mr Sarkozy is understood to have discussed the idea with other EU leaders ahead of next week’s European summit, Mr Blair’s last major international event as prime minister.
A quote from The Daily Express, 15 June 2007:
Tony Blair wants to hand the European Union radical new powers in his last act as Prime Minister, it emerged today.
The Prime Minister has welcomed controversial plans to bring back the troubled EU constitution by the back door – totally bypassing the need for public referendums on sweeping new powers for Brussels. [...] Britain’s voting rights would be reduced by a third under the scheme and our hard-won veto on European directives would be torn up. Britain could also lose the right to impose quotas on immigration.

Blair as commission president would be good with Blair as president Commission’s approach towards Israel would be more balanced. And more importantly Blair understands threat from Iran, which is the most important issue. With EU and US on same page we would be able to destroy Iranian nuke program. Blair is the only person who can convince all 27 EU members to send troops to Iran. With 27 EU members + US, Canada Australia and Israel we would be able to send a million troops to Iran. Elimination of Iranian regime would bring much needed stability in Middle East.

I am mostly aftraid these idiots are going to turn the entire EU into France, a neo-communist police state with high taxes and no freedoms (business or personal). You have the right to PAY!!!!! Thank G-D you were born in France are are not starving under "Cowboy Capitalist" exploitation in Texas! Vive le France!

"Tony Blair, the British prime minister, could end up swapping Downing Street for a job as the first full-time European Union president..."
Lovely! The Union will now be led by a politician who supports the worst of contemporary Western politics: (1) marching into folly on foreign battlefields (i.e. following Bush's lead); (2) promoting multiculturalism and political correctness; and (3) taking credit for the benefits of economic restructuring that was undertaken before his tenure. Though he is no Thatcher, Blair is not Old Labour either. Indeed, the BNP, not unlike France's FN is more into government intervention in the economy than New Labour is.
"Mr Sarkozy is understood to have discussed the idea with other EU leaders ahead of next week’s European summit, Mr Blair’s last major international event as prime minister."
Perhaps Sarkozy is looking to cement the EU around an Anglo-French alliance rather than Germany, which has practically underwrote the entire integration project and until recently has pursued leftist socio-economic policies (not that Merkel is really "shaking things up").
"Tony Blair wants to hand the European Union radical new powers in his last act as Prime Minister, it emerged today."
These would come in handy were he to be "appointed" its president.

A true Eurocrat.

I may not be the brightest primate on the planet, but I get it,I just don't WANT it.
"What's going on is that too many are glued to their nationalism and local customs and as long as this stands, the EU will be everything but a Union."
I agree and long may that situation hold true.

Quit,Sir? Well,quite so...
"Twenty-two years ago, in Paris, I was a barman...There was a common pot, where they told me you had to put all the tips. After two months, I found out I was the only one doing it! That was my first lesson in applied socialism! "

Britons have'nt put many tips in the common EU pot, but this is not the point. What's going on is that too many are glued to their nationalism and local customs and as long as this stands, the EU will be everything but a Union.
It's a pity indeed ...

... that so-called bright politicians have to be tempted by a carrot.
Besides this, it's also a pity to claim for referendums about matters nobody understands.
For Britain there IS a way out, just quit. They won't need a referendum for that neither.

Better than Schroeder I guess
Submitted by Amsterdamsky on Sun, 2007-06-17 09:54.
I suppose this is not as bad as signing a contract with Gazprom and then taking a 6 figure job with them after leaving office. Schroeder should be executed for treason.
The BBC just verified the new framework and the permanent president that these slimeballs are going to try to slide through without any sheeples having to vote on it. Interestinly they noted that since the Nee vote the pace of legislation in Brussels has increased 25%. There truly is no off switch to this monster.
